In October 1918, we were fighting two wars: one in Europe against a visible foe (the army of Germany and its allies) and one here at home against an invisible opponent, a killer virus referred to as the “Spanish flu.”

The flu was a pandemic (a worldwide epidemic) that first was identified in January 1918. Throughout the next two years, it would spread across the globe and kill between 50 million and 100 million people — 3 to 5 percent of the world’s population.
