More than 100 years ago, the large stone building just north of downtown Kankakee was home to the spirited carriage horses of one of the county’s wealthiest citizens.

Today, that building houses a museum celebrating the spirit of the French-speaking men and women who immigrated here in the mid-1800s to build a new life on the broad Illinois prairies.

Located on the southwest corner of Indiana Avenue and Oak Street, the French Heritage Museum at the Stone Barn was opened as a satellite of the Kankakee County Museum in July 2012.
